Health & Safety
Small World Nursery has a policy to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for both our children and employees.
All our nurseries have been passed by a health and safety officer as well as a fire officer and all aspects of our services have been fully risk assessed. We also have CCTV and Secure Entry Systems installed.
Risk Assessment
Daily risk assessments of playrooms are carried out by staff every morning and a detailed monthly risk assessment is carried out by the health and safety officer. All maintanence issues are reported to the manager which is then reported to head office. Our full time employed handyman attends to these immediately.
All staff are aware of risk assessments throughout the nursery and children are encouraged with self risk and behaviour rules.
Nursery Staff
All Small World Nurseries’ staff are fully vetted prior to employment.
SVQs, HNCs in childcare and education or HNC in childcare and education and staff are kept up to date with all new legislation by internal and external training.
We currently use Experiential Play (a highly recognized training provider) for most of external training courses. Nursery managers also carry out monthly training with staff on various topics such as:
- Child protection
- Infection control
- Behavior management
- Food hygiene
- First aid
- Fire safety
Absences and Sickness
It is important that you notify us in advance if possible, if your child is to be absent from his/her normal days, please call your nursery as soon as possible. Any time off is charged at normal fee rates.
Collecting your Child
In most instances it will be the same people collecting your child from the nursery and therefore our staff will get to know them well.
We have a strict security procedure in place for occasions when someone previously unknown to us has to collect your child, please adhere to this policy. Each child has an individual security password (you decide it when you are filling in enrolment forms) which is known only to us and whomever you decide to give it to. In the event of someone unknown to us collecting your child we would expect that person to know the password. Upon arrival at the nursery we shall ask for the password. Failure to give it will result in us not allowing your child to be taken from the nursery. We will contact you or your emergency contact for further instructions.
Oral Health
Working in conjunction with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Oral health promotions, we follow a tooth brushing programme. This includes all our staff attending annual training courses in promoting oral hygiene, healthy snacks and tooth brushing. All children are provided with their own labeled toothbrush which is stored in a covered rack.
We are also part of the Smile Too tooth brushing programme where we encourage children to brush their teeth daily using the correct equipment. Staff are fully trained in this area.
Our infection control procedures are:
- The racks are cleaned weekly and recorded by staff within each room.
- The children’s daily tooth brushing is also recorded by staff.
- Toothpaste is distributed on a plate to ensure the toothbrushes are not in contact with the tube of toothpaste.
- All staff follow the national tooth brushing standards.
